Botswana’s incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi was declared winner of the just ended Botswana general election which took place on 23 October 2019, after his party the Botswana Democratic Party secured a parliament majority. Some political pundits were gunning for a hung parliament and even defeat for the BDP, in the end there is a decisive winner.
With 45 of the 57 constituency seers declared, BDP had won 30 seats above the 29 seat threshold to be declared presidential winner, while party wins majority in Parliament.
What made the difference in BDP’s campaign was focusing on the youth and the middle class who are the majority of voters. In the last election Botswana won 37 seats and with a dozen constituencies remaining the party could eclipse that figure.
