Embalo Wins Guinea Bissau Presidency
1 min read
In a second round election that pitted former Prime Ministers Umaru Sissoko Embalo and Domingos Simoes Pereira saw the former edge the latter in a plebiscite held on 27 December.
Embalo beat the majority party PAIGE in Parliament candidate Pereira, after incumbent president Mario Vaz threw his weight behind Imbalo. The support of the largest party PAIGE was not enough to cross the line regardless that Pereira had won the first round with 40% of the vote.
The real test will be how Imbalo’s presidency will work with parliament and Prime Minister. The complex political situation which saw Imbalo serving only months as Prime Minister under Vaz’ presidency, who then kicked him out know too well the fine line he is treading.
Yet another election where the younger voter made a mark, as the wind beneath Imbalo’s win was the swathes of his youth supporters.
